Safety and warning signs
Safety and warning signs are all round us. We often walk past them without noticing them. Today we are going to search for and think about these signs.
- Talk in a group about safety signs. Who are they for? Where are they? What do they look like? How are they made? Who makes them?
- Think of as many safety sign as you can that represent "Danger"
- Think of as many safety sign as you can that represent "Caution"
- Think of as many safety sign as you can that represent "Suggested safety procedure"
- Think of as many safety sign as you can that represent "Emergency equipment "
Search
- Now your are going to go out and search for examples. Go out with your group and try to find at least 30.
- Take a picture of each sign you find. Then look around the sign and try to find the danger it's warning you of. Take a picture of what is dangerous.
- Look at the map. Where is the sign located? Take a screen shot of the map below. Then use the Adobe Draw application to mark where you found the sign using a number. Then match the number with the photographs you took (the first sign would be #1, mark where you found sign #1 on the map with "1").
- Post your map with its numbers and all the photos of your signs and dangers to your website.

- What do I have to know to understand this sign? Who would understand this sign? Age? People?
Example answer:
- This sign is for people who need to extinguish a fire.
- It is made from metal with red and white paint.
- This sign is showing emergency equipment.
- I think this because the fire extinguisher is not a warning or procedure, it is showing where the equipment is.
- This sign has an icon of a fire extinguisher, it has symbolic English text that says Fire Extinguisher, and it has a red background that can be index or symbol stating danger.
- To understand this sign you would have to know what a fire extinguisher looks like, be able to recognize the words in English and or know red and whit often represents fire signs. I think this sign is for people who have been trained or have been shown what a fire extinguisher is, since this equipment would only be useful for someone who knows how to use it.
